Rodney Garratt graduated from the University of Western Australia with degrees of B.Juris(Hons) and LL.B (Hons) in 1976. He completed the English Bar exams and read in chambers in London. In 1978 he was called to the Bar by the Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn and practised in London until returning to Australia.

Upon his return in 1980 he took up a position with Mallesons (as the firm was then known) dealing principally in banking, company and insolvency work. He became a Senior Associate with that firm.

In 1983 Rodney signed the roll of counsel in Melbourne, where he has since maintained his chambers. He graduated with the degree of LL.M from Monash University in 1983, and was appointed Queens Counsel in 1996. Rodney has a wide commercial practice, the principal areas of which are equity, contract law, trade practices and intellectual property. He is also an Accredited Mediator and has since 1995 acted frequently as mediator for mediating parties.
