Joseph graduated Bachelor of Laws from the University of London in 1990 and was admitted as a Barrister-at-Law, Middle Temple in November 1991. He returned to Singapore and practiced as an advocate solicitor between 1993 and 2004. In 1999 he established his own firm together with two partners. The firm had a broadly based practice including commercial, insolvency, family, immigration, criminal law and personal injury. In this period Joseph began to specialize in criminal law.
Joseph immigrated to Australia in 2004 and in April 2006 he was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Victoria. He signed the Victorian Bar Roll on 22nd May 2008. Prior to signing the Bar Roll Joseph was employed by a specialist criminal law firm in Melbourne
At the Victorian Bar Joseph will practise primarily in the criminal jurisdiction.
Significant Cases;
Some of the more significant matters in which he has been involved include the following:
Junior counsel in the ‘Happy Avenue’ murder appeal in which four young men staged a robbery to cover up the accidental strangulation of a domestic helper. {Singapore}
Junior counsel in the John Martin murder trial where the dismembered body of the victim was thrown in the Singapore River.{Singapore}
Between 1993 and 1994, he also appeared as junior counsel in two long and complex commercial fraud cases, the Colour Touch and Biscuit King trials. {Singapore}
In 2003 and 2004, he appeared as lead local counsel in the drug trafficking trial and appeal of Melbourne man, Van Nguyen, after the admission of Lex Lasry Q.C. [now Justice Lasry] was denied. Together with barrister Julian McMahon, they continued to represent Van until his execution in December 2005. Joseph was awarded the Law Institute of Victoria’s Presidents pro bono award in 2006 for his work in the Van Nguyen case. {Singapore}
In 2005, Joseph was instructing solicitor in the Salt nightclub murder trial and a drug trafficking and money-laundering trial of former members of the Victorian Police drug squad. {Melbourne}
