Following her admission to practice in 1991, Val was engaged in general practice with exposure to a large range of matters from civil, family, crime, common law, and commercial work. Val appeared regularly in various courts and tribunals.

From 1994 to 2007 Val was the Child Support solicitor at the Springvale Monash Legal Service during which she co-ordinated the family violence duty lawyer program and regularly undertook appearance work. Val was the locum supervisor of Monash Law students across a broad range of law including family, crime, civil and consumer law.

Other positions held by Val include locum solicitor in the Victoria Legal Aid Child Support Service, at Latrobe University and at the West Heidelberg Legal Service.

Val is the co-author of the Child Support Chapter in the Lawyers Practice Manual.

Val practises in the areas of family and defacto law, crimes family violence and compensation matters, and Magistrates criminal and civil matters.
