Jim Shaw completed articles at Rigby Cooke and signed the Bar Roll in 1996. He read with Craig Harrison SC.

He has been a member of Crockett Chambers since 2005 (www.crockett.com.au) 

In the civil jurisdiction Jim practices primarily in the areas of commercial law and construction law, appearing in trials and applications in the County Court, Supreme Court, Federal Court and VCAT.

He has also appeared in appeals in the Court of Appeal including Swintons Pty Ltd v Age Old Builders Pty Ltd (2005) 13 VR 381, the leading authority on the interpretation of ss 14 and 132 of the Domestic Building Contracts Act 1995, and O'Reilly v TS & B Retail Systems Pty Ltd ( 2010) VSCA 47 regarding Calderbank letters.

He also has an extensive paperwork practice, providing advices and drawing and settling pleadings, witness statements, outlines of argument and other documents.

Jim has over 10 years' experience in alternative dispute resolution and mediation of commercial and construction disputes.

He has been a member of the Building Dispute Practitioners' Society since 2001. (www.bdps.com.au)

Jim also has an extensive criminal law practice in which he appears as defence counsel as well as prosecuting on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions and other authorities.

He has appeared in a large number of County Court criminal trials and pleas. These matters have included charges of drug trafficking, violence offences, property offences, dishonesty offences, fraud, extortion, blackmail, sexual offences, conspiracy, false imprisonment, firearms offences, arson, attempting to pervert the course of justice and perjury.

He has been briefed as junior counsel to a number of silks including Digby QC, Martin QC, Beaumont QC, Shand QC, Levin QC, Sifris SC and Jones SC in civil matters and Horgan SC in criminal matters.

Jim is a trained advocacy instructor with the Australian Advocacy Institute (www.advocacy.com.au) and is a Sessional Lecturer in the Faculty of Law at Monash University. He is also a mentor in the Melbourne Law School Mentor Program at the University of Melbourne.

Jim is a member of the Criminal Bar Association and the Commercial Bar Association.
